DIY Drywall Repair vs. Professional Help: What You Need to Know

Online videos make drywall repair look easy, and books provide enticing step-by-step guides on how to repair drywall or plaster over a weekend. I recently saw that Home Depot is offering texture packets that you can spray like a mini water gun to apply popcorn ceiling texture. You get a few shots to get it right, and I just laughed when I saw it. Those companies selling these kits are making a mint for the inventor. “Why didn’t I think of that?”, I thought. Oh, because I don’t like ripping people off.

I was in the paint aisle the other day and overheard a couple trying to figure out the best way to repair their peeling texture. Curious, I listened as the store associate gave them incorrect advice and instructions. After about 30 minutes listening to their confusion, I stepped in, gave them some real advice on drywall repair and refinishing, and left my business card in case they needed further help. The husband was determined to do it himself, and I don’t blame him—I’m the same way. But I also value my time, which is hard to come by these days. They had over $80 worth of tools and materials in their cart—most of which were incorrect or unnecessary. He said that this was their second trip back to the store just for materials – while the wife rolled her eyes.

His wife called me about two weeks later—clearly frustrated. Her husband had thrown in the towel after trying to fix a ceiling patch right in the center of their living room. It was the focal point of their home, and now it looked worse than before. The repair wouldn’t hold, the patch stood out like a sore thumb, and she was still finding white sheetrock dust in corners of her home from all the sanding he did. She was tired of mopping, tired of the comments from guests, and tired of the gas and time wasted running back and forth to the home improvement store. Over 20 hours spent, and nothing to show for it but a lumpy mess.

We get it – everyone wants to save money. But when it comes to ceiling repair or wall repair in the spaces that matter most, peace of mind comes from calling a pro. What took them days of frustration, we could’ve done cleanly in just a few hours.
